Coming soon! Pen y Fan Mountain photography workshop.
Hikes, cameras, action!
If you're keen to get into hiking and you want to learn to take stunning landscape photos, this is the workshop for you.
We will be covering all the basics from composition, timing and lighting, navigation for planning your shots, using the Photopills app, camera settings for landscape photography exposure settings, aperture and depth of field plus some tricks of the trade to make the most of your camera.
We will be starting from the Storey Arms car park and heading uphill to the peak of Pen y Fan, Corn Du and Cribyn. We will aim to organise the day so that we get a chance to photograph the sunset before heading back down. Please bring a head torch!
This workshop has a maximum of 6 spaces to ensure quality one to one teaching time. Please note that the workshop requires 4 people in order to run. Many thanks.
We'll also indulge in some nature connection through photography. It's amazing how much we start to open our eyes to our environment when we are actively seeking beauty around us. Learning about weather, seasons, plants, animals and life cycles helps us to see the world with a new and exciting perspective.
Please note that the better you familiarise yourself with your camera before the workshop, the more you will get from it. If possible, please try to find the following buttons or settings on your camera: White balance, ISO, Exposure/ Shutter Speed, Aperture. We will be going through all of these on the day though.
This mountain walk is not far off the A470 and is easily accessed from Cardiff, Bristol, Swansea, Brecon, Hay on Wye and the rest of south Wales. What do I need to bring?
- Please bring your camera or iPhone. To achieve the best results from this workshop it will need to have the ability to be set manually.
- If you have a tripod please do bring it. You will need to carry it for the day so an appropriate bag to carry your equipment is advised. If you don't have one, don't worry, you can still learn the skills and I have couple of spares you may be able to borrow.
- If you have a polarising filter, please bring this along. However, this is not essential for this workshop.
- A lens cloth and a small flannel for drying your camera will be useful in case of rain or splashes.
- Please also bring food and drinks as we will be in a remote area for duration of the workshop.
- Waterproof and supportive footwear is a must.
- Full waterproof top and bottoms are also advised.
- Head torch, fully charged.

Who this is for?
This course is tailored to women who own a camera or iPhone and who want to learn to get more out of their camera to take their photography to the next level while improving wellbeing through nature connection.
What will I learn?
By the end of this workshop you will have created beautiful images of mountains using knowledge of composition, exposure and aperture and leave with the confidence to use all your camera’s manual settings, starting you off on your journey as a newly fledged nature photographer!
Where are we meeting?
The Storey Arms cafe (TBC)
What time?
1.00pm until dusk
We will meet after lunch time at 1.00 to give you a chance to reach the location and to eat before we start. We will be doing various camera setting exercises and stopping along the way, so although this is a relatively short walk, it may take us some time to get around the loop. We will finish no later than 8pm. It may be earlier than this, dependant on weather conditions and the wishes of the group. When it comes to mountains, light tends to get better towards sunset, during the golden hour so we will aim to catch this magical light where possible!
Facilities
This is a remote location. Please bring a packed lunch and drinks for the duration of the workshop. There is no mobile phone reception at this location, nor are there toilets. The nearest facilities are in Talybont on Usk, a few miles away.
Parking
Parking at Blaen y Glyn is free. There is also parking at the Royal Oak pub where we will meet and greet.
Terrain/ fitness
This mountain trail is the most gentle of the routes up Pen y Fan, meaning we can focus on photography, not on huffing and panting and maybe even have a chat while walking. There is some uneven terrain, there are slippery rocks so relative walking ability is advised.
This workshop has a maximum of 4 spaces to ensure quality one to one teaching time. On request we may accept up to 6 people.
